Caustic Etch on aluminum is typically a pretreatment step prior to an anodize or chromate coating. However, etching is often used as a stand alone process prior to welding aluminum or to simply degrease and clean. During the etch step, a small amount of aluminum is removed when the parts are submersed in a sodium hydroxide bath for a predetermined period of time.
